As the sunlight begins to deplete and the colder months close in on us you may want to curl up inside and remain indoors for as long as possible. Baltimore has a better idea and it invites you out into the dark as several artists and events coincide for the festival of Brilliant Baltimore. This year the creative and illuminating show is partnered with the Baltimore Book Festival where authors will be gathering en masse to share knowledge, more stories and of course take part in signings for adoring readers. Together these events hope to draw as many people back outside, instead of cowering from the fall at home come and enjoy the incredible lights outside.

Gazing At Light City

This engaging and wondrous event returns this year to Baltimore’s waterfront where the city is re designed in light. What this means is that using some of the most innovative modern technology that dark fall nights are cast aside by pieces of art that include several different forms of light. Whether you want to take a stroll though the neon coloured and cool-lit archways that cover the paths or stop to take in a piece made from thousands of individual LED lights, whatever you do here there is light involved. Find the DiscoBug a VW bug now coated entirely with glossy mirrors turning it into a giant disco ball. Here you can watch as lights are used in sequence to create living animations before your eyes or you can immerse yourself into the colours. In the Shrooms exhibit will walk around several illuminated oversized mushrooms creating an enchanting and oddly natural vibe in the city.

Many of the pieces in Light City aren’t intended to just be seen but to be played with, here a bunch of installations require you to play with the light in new and interesting ways you may have never thought were possible before. In the human tiles exhibit you become a part of the architecture as a mix of video, projection and computer magic collide to create real time alterations to the décor of nearby buildings. The cool looking giant circles you will see along the streets this year are the Loop exhibit, these walk in pieces take a page from the earliest animations and turn them into something fun, big and full of strobing bright lights, step into one yourself to make your own flashing cartoon sequence. One of the coolest looking, customisable and most seamless parts of the show however is the waterlight graffiti, this is something everyone can get involved in. A huge black wall quickly becomes a tablet for anyone who grabs a paintbrush or spray can of water, by painting onto this incredible piece of tech you will set off the hidden LEDs under the surface and make your mark on the city in a new way (until the water evaporates at least).

These unmissable feats of design and play encourage people to work together and enjoy the city even in its darkest hours. Whether you have a love of design, reading, art or just community there is something for you here. All these exhibits, the artists and authors will be in Baltimore this November.
